Latent Community

Latent Community is an art duo based in Athens, composed by visual artists and filmmakers Sotiris Tsiganos and Ionian Bisai. Their work explores issues of social, political, and ecological justice through moving-image, sound, photography, and textile art. In their films they often explore topics of memory, trauma, and community identity, examining the ethics of representation and the politics of collaboration. Through immersive sound installations they are interested in the relationship between human experience and their environment. Their interdisciplinary practice, informed by the Mediterranean, integrates extensive fieldwork, relational processes, and performative sequences as new ways of rendering forgotten memories, amplifying counter-narratives and exploring endangered ecosystems.
Their work has been presented internationally in exhibitions and festivals, including the Athens Biennale (2017); documenta 14 – Public Programs (2017); Sharjah Film Platform – Sharjah Art Foundation (2019); Recontemporary art space in Turin (2019); Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (2020); PCAI – Polyeco Contemporary Art Initiative (2020); School of Waters – Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennale (2021); Grand Central Art Center, California, USA; and the 23rd Biennale of Sydney: Rivus (2022). They have been granted awards by LOOP Barcelona, Sharjah Art Foundation, ARTWORKS-SNF Artist Fellowship Program and The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI) at Columbia University. They have participated in residency programs such as Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, USA; ONASSIS AiR: The School of Infinite Rehearsals; and Caravan Residency Program (Cittadellarte–Fondazione Pistoletto & Centre for Fine Arts–Bozar).
